Full World Cup 2026 Schedule
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the longest and feature the most matches in history. With 48 teams divided into 12 groups, the tournament will feature 104 matches over approximately 39 days of non-stop competition. Check out everything you need to know about the official schedule below.
Official Tournament Dates
The 2026 World Cup will begin on June 11, 2026, and the grand final is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at the legendary MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, United States. The opening match will be played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City — a powerful symbol of football tradition kickstarting the largest tournament ever organized.
In total, there will be nearly six weeks of matches, distributed among 16 host cities across the three host nations: United States (11 cities), Mexico (3 cities), and Canada (2 cities). It is the most ambitious sporting event in history in terms of logistics and scale.
Group Stage: June 11 to June 28
The first phase of the 2026 World Cup follows the new expanded format: 12 groups of 4 teams each. Each team will play 3 matches in the group stage, totaling 72 matches in this step. Group stage games will be played simultaneously in multiple cities to accommodate the volume of matches.
With the top 2 teams from each group (24 teams) and the 8 best third-placed teams qualifying, a total of 32 teams will advance to the knockout stage. This means the group stage will be extremely competitive, as finishing third still offers a real chance of qualification.
Group stage matches will be organized in regional clusters to minimize travel. Teams allocated to the West Coast of the US and Canada will play predominantly in that region, while Eastern block teams will play in cities like New York, Miami, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Round of 32: June 29 to July 2
This is the major update for the 2026 World Cup: an extra knockout round before the traditional round of 16. With 32 teams qualifying from the group stage, there will be 16 knockout matches in this phase. Matches will be played in a short 4-day window, with up to 4 matches per day.
It is in this phase that many less traditional teams will have their chance to shine. Historically, surprises in the World Cup happen right after the group stage, when the knockout format allows any motivated team to overcome a favorite in a single decisive match.
Round of 16: July 3 to July 6
The traditional round of 16 will feature 8 matches, with the 16 surviving teams from the previous phase facing off. Here, the level of competition rises significantly. Matches will be distributed across the largest stadiums in the three countries, ensuring full houses and electric atmospheres.
Quarter-finals: July 9 and July 10
Only 8 teams will remain. The quarter-finals usually produce the most dramatic matches in World Cup history. With the games concentrated in just 2 days, the tension will be at its peak.
Semi-finals: July 13 and July 14
The semi-finals will define the two finalists of the World Cup 2026. Historically, these matches are played in iconic venues. In 2026, the semi-finals are expected to take place on the biggest stages in the United States, such as the AT&T Stadium in Dallas and the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, both with a capacity for over 70,000 spectators.
Third Place Play-off and Final: July 18 and July 19
The third place play-off will be played on July 18, one day before the grand final. While historically receiving less attention, this match defines the World Cup podium and is a last chance for the defeated semi-finalists to end their campaign on a positive note.
The grand final will be played on July 19, 2026, at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (New York metropolitan area). The stadium, with a capacity for over 82,000 people, will host the most anticipated moment in world sports.
Match Times for Brazil
One of the biggest advantages of the 2026 World Cup for Brazilian fans is the time zone. Unlike the World Cup in Qatar (2022), where matches took place in the morning and early afternoon, in 2026 the times will be much more comfortable.
Matches in the United States will have varied kickoff times, but most important matches will be held between1:00 PM and 10:00 PM Brasília time (BRT), allowing most Brazilians to watch without waking up in the middle of the night. Matches in Mexico will have even more favorable times, while matches in Canada (Vancouver) might have slightly later kickoffs due to the Pacific time zone.
